China's space program

Paul Simon says: "China already has rocket-launch facilities and has been in the commercial satellite business for many years; they are contemplating a manned flight later this year. Currently much space and missle research is centered in two places, remote Lop Nur, in western China and Mianyang, in Sichuan province. The Chinese have had their share of disasters and debacles-- but so has everyone else in 'the space game'. These disasters have not been limited to manned flights. Many a satellite launch has gone awry. My guess is that, strapped for cash as the central government of China is, a new facility on Hainan will remain a pipe dream unless the locals can come up with billions and billions of private or provincial dollars". RH: I am disappointed in Paul. I thought he was writing to volunteer to go into space on the Chinese homemade rocket.
