CHINA: Its image

Our history textbook project is just one phase of the way the image of a country is formed. Every country seeks to enhance its international image. "Ring out the old, ring in the new" is the slogan of China, at least of the Shanghai region. From that great city the Telegraph Group correspondent filed ((8/11/02) a report entitled " China declares war on pyjama army". It begins "Officials in Shanghai have declared war on an army of pyjama-wearers accused of damaging the city's modernisation drive by strolling in public in their nightwear. Official newspapers are running a campaign denouncing the practice as a hangover from the era when China was a poor nation".

At the same time, German TV ran a story about the new high-speed train between Shanghai and Beijing. Be it said in fairness that many Californians go around in something like pyjamas, and that plans for a high-speed train between San Francisco and Los Angeles are scarcely on paper.
