Overfishing
Why this sudden surge of interest in overfishing? I think it is being promoted by President Bush, who would like to remembered for something "green". Vice Admiral (retired) Roger Rufe, a friend of his, said that, just as Teddy Roosevelt is known as the father of the national parks, Bush could be known as the father of marine sanctuaries. Rufe is commissioner of the Pew Oceans Commission, a creation of the Pew Foundation. He stresses that all of America is involved in the struggle against pollution and fish depletion. The pesticides used in the farms of the American heartland flow into the Mississippi, where they kill the fish, and then into the Golf of Mexico, with the same result. Rufe is concerned also about the deterioration of the deep waters off Monterey, California.Ronald Hilton - 6/7/03
