The plight of Women
Tom Grey reports that the move from communism to capitalism: "In Slovakia under communism, a lot of work was more equal, but street sweeping was mechanized. Indoor janitors were, and still are, mostly women. In 1996, when my wife started working as a doctor in a hospital, she made about 7 000 SKK per month ($180). The cleaning women made more money (but with less chance for outside favors/bribes). Even now, at some 12 - 14 000 SKK (~$320) per month, quite well qualified doctors are hugely underpaid here. Most of the new businesses, and new business corruption, was run and organized by men; most of the new capitalist wealth being created is controlled by men. In the nicer hotels, more young men will carry bags".Ronald Hilton - 9/20/02
