GERMANY: Sprechen Sie English?
Geography has been abolished at many American universities, and language departments, which used to have many majors and flourishing graduate programs, are often reduced to teaching courses used to satisfy a language requirement. German has been badly hit, and this phenomenon may also hit British universities. Stephan Read says:
"The Guardian reported that the BBC suspended its German language news broadcast because they found that Germans substantially chose to listen to the English language version. In addition, they report that advertising in Germany utilizes English, possibly to seem "cutting edge" but also because it is not clear that some of the strict laws about "false claims" in advertising--e.g. "XXX is the best bank" are enforceable if the claims are not made in German!"
