GERMANY: The Second Reich

Several non-German WAISers have written favorably about the Second Reich. German historian Christian Leitz answers them: "I very much hope that not too many Germans remember the Second Reich 'with respect and even nostalgia'! Respect for what? A pseudo-democratic system with elections, parliament, etc., but with a government that was appointed by the Kaiser and his cronies (apart from the last month of the monarchy's existence)? Censorship, police brutality, denial of basic freedoms, a powerful military that regarded civilians as inferior, etc, etc? For those feel positively about the Second Reich, I recommend urgent perusal of Heinrich Mann's Der Untertan".
