Histroy: Sherman's march through Georgia
From a sketch by John Gehl of the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, I select but one item:"His 1903 statue of General William Tecumseh Sherman in New York's Central Park climaxed a brilliant career. In this heroic-scale bronze, Sherman is shown riding through Georgia led by the surging figure of a Winged Victory--a distinctively original contribution to the equestrian monument tradition, brilliantly combining portraiture, a sense of movement, and appropriate grandeur."

RH:
This triumphalism seems most inappropriate is a country still trying to heal the wounds of the Civil War. Sherman deliberately humiliated the South, and so does the statue. Remember our debates on the consequences of humiliating the vanquished.Ronald Hilton - 11.30.03
