HISTORY: The crisis in

An earlier posting described the crisis in Political Science. Paul Simon has sent me information about The Historical Society, which was formed as the result of a similar crisis among historians. The American Historical Association (AHA) was accused of being controlled by leftists imbued with sociological theories. The Historical Society claims to provide, like WAIS, a forum free from unilateral bias. Certainly its leaders cannot be dismissed as conservatives. I wrote a piece on this some time ago: the AHA rejected the charges against it. There was a similar crisis in the Latin American Studies Association, where leftists and rightists were incapable of rational debate. For the situation at Stanford, see the forthcoming post on Romulo Betancourt.
