WORLD HISTORY
From Slovakia, Tom Grey comments:"I almost replied earlier that a "world history website" could, and should, be created. Possibly multiple sites -- similar to multiple textbooks in Italy? Better would be one site having "all" history books, on-line, in some eBook (pdf?) format, for "easier" comparison. Plus extensive indexes and guides. Plus references to originals.Plus critiques of specific books, and specific "ideas" (eg Holocaust denial).
I note that the EU sponsored a History of Slovakia for Slovaks (in Slovak), but were unsatisfied with the treatment of WWII (too pro-Slovak), so that volume had to be redone.Having both on-line might allow comparisons. But also might excessively validate a "fringe" idea. Content control of such a site should be of special importance.
I suggest that WAIS discuss some ideas and make a proposal to the NEH that includes reasonable criteria. One such idea is to create a popularity contest, among current historians (authors and teachers), allowing some maximum number into a newly created World History Net Academy, (serving for life? for some 6 years, needing re-election?). Starting roughly with 600, so 1 for every 10 million people; or 1 for each UN country (some 200?) plus 1 for each 10 million? (what about the Kurds? the Gypsy/Romanies? what about different religions?)
This academy would become the decision making body about content. Initially this would be very "self-selecting" and voluntary, but relatively quickly over time, it would become a prestigious position.
Thoughtful guidance now could make a big difference in the organizational structure. If money already is available for something, then something is going to happen."
