IRAQ: The religious lineup

While control of oil is an essential component in the Middle East crisis (France and Germany do not want it to be under US control), there is a religious factor. There is an acute feeling in Europe that men like Perle and Wolfowitz represent the American Zionist lobby which is pushing for war against Iraq, and that the US has a double standard in dealing with Israeli and Iraqi violations of international agreements. As the same time, the Pope has just issued a statement stronger than his previous ones condemning the use of force against Iraq. Thus the Catholic position is closer to the Arab one than to the Zionist one. While "Catholic" Europe and Latin America are largely Catholic in name only, on this issue the Pope's words will undoubtedly carry weight.
