IRAQ: What did April Glaspie say?
Tim Brown forwards this version of the role of Ambassador April Glaspie in Iraq: "According to the story to which Tom Moore refers, just before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait she met with Saddam, who asked her how the US would respond to Iraq's occupying Kuwait militarily, since it claims Kuwait is actually Iraqi territory. Reportedly she said something to the effect of "let me get back to you on that." She then returned to the embassy but did not report to the State Department on that part of her exchange with Saddam. This was allegedly interpreted by Saddam as US indifference or even acquiescence to the invasion. I have heard other versions".
