ISRAEL and the non-proliferation treaty
Bert Westbrook rejects the statement that "the US does not mention Israel's violations of the non-proliferation treaty". Bert says: "Israel is not a signatory of the non-proliferation treaty. Neither, for that matter, are India/Pakistan. Iran & Iraq, however, are, as are all the members of the Security Council. See http://www.iaea.org/worldatom/Documents/Legal/npt_status.shtml". RH: This is technically correct. The non-proliferation treaty was meant to discourage countries without nuclear weapons from developing them in exchange for help in developing nuclear power for peaceful purposes. Israel did not need to sign it because it did not need this help, and in any case it has access to US technology. The fact is that the US wants a Middle East in which only Israel has nuclear weapons. This policy is generally viewed as totally lacking in evenhandedness. Moreover, there are other UN resolutions which Israel has defied, with the support of the US.Ronald Hilton - 5/21/03
