"Pushing the envelope"
Tim Brown, whom we commend as a dangerous revolutionary, writes: ""Pushing the envelope" is a widely used term that, to me, means testing the limits of something, whether physically, politically, or economically. As to whether it poisons the well of English or not, I leave that judgment to others, while remembering the report of one English professor to similar laments some years ago. "My learned colleagues may lament changes in the English language as much as they want. But there ain't nothin' they can do about it but bitch."
My comment: I condemn Tim's using the word "bitch", which is counter to our aim of fighting verbal abuse of women or animals. Of course, we recognize that language changes. Our revolutionary aim is to insist that people write and speak clear English.
