Rebecca West (1892-1983)

John Gehl sends this:
"All good biography, as all good fiction, comes down to the study of original sin, of our inherent disposition to choose death when we ought to choose life." (Rebecca West).

RH:
It is politically incorrect to talk of original sin, but good for the woman who wrote under the name of Rebecca West (1892-1983). She was a close friend of H.G. Wells, whom WAISers have praised.

Do they know and praise Rebecca West? I am sure George Sassoon knows "Black Lamb and Grey Falcon" (1937) a guide to Yugoslavia, George's favorite playground. In 1933 she had published a biography "Saint Augustine". Related to it is "The Castle" (1957), lectures on political and religious themes. I will spare you my thoughts on the opening quotation.
