Freedom of the press: China and Hong Kong
Notice what Michael May has to say about getting a story favorable to China printed:"I read the South China Morning Post when in Hong Kong. It seemed like much the same newspaper to me before and after the handover, very much like Western dailies and unlike government-controlled papers (of which I have read quite a few, both in China and in the former Soviet Union). The last time I was in Hong Kong was nearly a year ago,so perhaps things have changed. The South China Morning Post has an on-line edition at http://www.scmp.com/ so people can check for themselves.
On the matter of US newspapers coverage of China, I have talked to a couple of US reporters from major US papers based in China who said it was difficult or impossible to get a story favorable to China printed, especially one pointing out progress in human rights or environmental protection. Yet no one observing China over the years can deny there has been significant such progress, though much more is needed".
