GLOBAL JOURNALIST, July--September 2001
A striking feature of the modern age is the invasion of women in the media. In most countries (except Muslim ones) the majority of TV announcers are women. This is a nice, cozy job, but women are moving into the reporting business, where the danger goes from being required to stand in the rain or snow to give realism, to reporting from places where their very lives are in danger. The July--September 2001 issue of Global Journalist, published by the International Press Institute, features "Chronicles of Courage", stories of fourteen women who have reported from dangerous places. The section "World Watch" reports on cases of trouble for journalists, while "Death Watch" tells the stories of twelve journalists who were killed during the period January to May. The countries responsible should be ashamed of themselves, but probably they do not know what that means.Ronald Hilton - 7/15/01
