The International Press Institute

Two professions deserve our respect and thanks: medicine and journalism. The former, which demands skill and very hard work, saves lives and protects health. The latter keeps us informed and consequently free, and, in many countries, involves hardship and serious danger. In this country there are few quack doctors, and yellow journalism has largely disappeared.
The International Press Institute publishes the IPI Report, which reports threats to press freedom around the world. The third quarter 1999 issue carries the usual stories about journalists killed. Most publicized was that of BBC anchor Jill Dando in London, but it is not known if that was because she hosted "Crimewatch."
Because of our interest in Argentina's Patagonia, we single out the murder of Ricardo Gangeme, editor of El Informador Chubutense. Chubut's capital is Rawson, and Trelew, where he was killed, is a nearby town named by Welsh settlers. He had been threatened by a powerful businessman, Héctor Fernández. Perhaps Patagonian WAISer Sergio Sepiurka has some comment.
