National Press Club

The National Press Club in Washington has celebrated its 90th birthday. We take advantage of the occasion once more to express our debt to the press, which constitutes our best information network about international affairs. However, as Walter Cronkite lamented, there are few overseas bureaus now. It is cheaper to send a reporter in when a crisis occurs, although he lacks the necessary background. We remember the pre-aviation days when correspondents were stationed for years in a capital and had a greater expertise than the embassy staff.
