SOS! Save Our Souls!

     A famous Hollywood spokesman called the Soviet Union "the empire of evil." That description could also be applied to Hollywood. A previous posting described how Hollywood is feeding the American public, indeed the world, a false version of American history. It is bad enough if the American public believes that the U.S. government plotted the murder of President Kennedy. It compounds the offense if the world swallows the story and thereby anti-American poison.
     Now we see how Hollywood is poisoning the minds of youth. The teenage gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 12 students and a teacher at the Littleton, Colorado high school and then committed suicide, left a message in which Klebold said "I hope we kill 250 of you." They hoped that the feat would bring them Hollywood immortality. They discussed which director could be trusted with the script, Steven Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino.
     American politicians invoke the Bible, and even carry one conspicuously to church as proof of their piety. The post of chaplain of the U.S. Congress is coveted, and there is an argument over the next appointee, a Roman Catholic or a Lutheran. Even the gun lobby invokes the Bible.
     Perhaps this is the time to remind them of the Pharisee who thanked the Lord for having made him better then other men. It is time to cast the beam out of our own eye. "Eye" is especially appropriate in speaking of Hollywood. The story is circulating that President Clinton, who has many friends in Hollywood, would like to have the $1 million a year job of Jack Valenti, the Hollywood lobbyist in Washington. He would presumably carry his Bible with him.
     There are public interest groups trying to clean up Hollywood. Why do they get so little publicity?
