MEXICO: Indigenous Mexican Indians

Regarding the 300 Mexican Indians who demonstrated outside the US Embassy saying they wanted political asylum in the US because the Mexican government doe not give them cultural freedom, Paul Simon says: "Actually, that isn't a way to get into the US; you can't claim asylum at an Embassy or Consulate, you have to be in a country to seek asylum. There is the occasional random case of a fence-jumper with special circumstances. Sometimes they are shown to the gate, sometimes special arrangements are made for them to be considered refugees on a case by case basis. The indigenous Mexicans will be sent home, I predict".

My guess is that the stunt was planned by the enemies of President Fox, including the PRI, to embarrass him.
