MEXICO: Religion and related groups.
In the presidential election, the Catholic Church avoided giving the impression that Vicente Fox was its man, and he likewise tried to avoid it, even though it is commonly supposed to be the case. Asked in a Televisa interview about this, he avoided the question by saying that during the campaign he had not been to mass, since he was too busy.
Paul Rich has special interest in Masonry and similar movements. In the 1999 issue of Catholic Southwest there is an article by him on "The Mexican Revolution and the Caballeros de Colón" (Knights of Columbus.). It shows how the Masons, traditionally viewed as anti-clerical, tried to improve their relations with the Catholic Church. We must now wait and see how this sub rosa problem works itself out.
