MEXICO: cockfights - animal versus human rights

Raśl Escalante reports: "When my father was Consul of Mexico in Sacramento, he made quite a name for himself defending Mexican migrant workers' labor rights. On one occasion he visited a farm somewhere in the Central Valley where the workers were housed in what was clearly substandard housing (no bunks, tin roof, very crowded). When he confronted the farmer with the fact that he'd incurred in numerous labor code violations, instead of taking the more common reaction of becoming defensive and having my father removed from the grounds, the farmer tried to generate some rapport by showing him around the farm. The highlight of the tour was the air-conditioned shed where the farmer's fighting cocks were housed."
