MEXICO: Education and the Mexican people
John Wonder says: " I wonder if Linda Nyquist has read Octavio Paz's dissection of the Mexican character where he discusses "las mascaras", to the effect that there is nothing behind the mask? Would this clarify the enigma of her Mexican student?" My comment: Let's be fair. A lot of US students have little interest in general education and the humanities. Their aim is to get a good job with a large salary. I admit the problem is much worse in Mexico. It goes back to Spain. At the Residencia de Estudiantes, all the students were studying for a profession. I do not recall one in the humanities, or any who were taking humanities courses.
