MEXICO: Indigenous Mexican Indians

One way to get into the US is to seek political asylum. See the AP story:

"Some 300 Indians accused the Mexican government of discrimination Thursday and asked the U.S. Embassy for political asylum. Gathering in front of the embassy, the Mazahua Indians held up signs requesting asylum for the 18,000 people who live in the town of San Antonio Pueblo Nuevo, 125 miles west of Mexico City...Wearing their traditional braids and colorful blouses, some 300 Indians sat peacefully in front of the embassy for several hours, handing out rice tacos to participants as nearby riot police watched. The Indians claim Mexican officials refuse to recognize their traditions and culture, so they want to live in the United States".
