MEXICO: Presidential Elections
I rightly guessed that Mexicans, exuberant over the victory of Fox, would disagree with Jim Whelan. Santiago Castillo writes:
"Fox is certainly not a messiah, and, like most leading politicians in the world, has made his share of faux pas. However, disqualifying the historic change in Mexico with the statistical comparisons of other democratic transformations grossly misses the point. Mr. Wheelan touches on valid issues, but, if he were sensitive to the importance of last Sunday's vote, he would have surely recognized that the numbers themselves do not tell the whole truth. The Chilean plebiscite was between a YES and a NO. If you add in all the percentage of the people who wanted to oust the PRI, the reading would be completely different."
