Celibacy and the Catholic Church
George Sassoon contributes to our discussion of clerical celibacy: "In the course of my reading on the mediaeval Church, I gathered that the reason why celibacy was demanded was because if the priesthood was celibate, they would leave all their money and property to the Church. If, married, of course, it would go to the children. Many priests came from wealthy families". RH: A very worthy cause. Those marvellous cathedrals cost a lot of money, which otherwise would have been wasted on spoiled brats.
