The Vatican & Liberation Theology

We have recorded the heated debate about liberation theology under Latin America, since that is where it began and where it is most practiced. Latin America is now the home of the Catholic Church's most numerous flock. However, the center of power is distant Rome, and Pope John Paul II, while promoting liberation theology, has been cautious not to appear to support any violent implementation of it. He shows his age, and there is speculation about his successor. He may be Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini of Milan, a Jesuit (!) sympathetic to non-violent liberation theology and with close ties to its soulmate, academia. His popularity may be too much for the College of Cardinals, but we await the smoke from the Vatican's chimney. Ronald Hilton - 06/13/98
