SPAIN: Basque terrorists

The attitude of the Basque Catholic Church toward the ETA terrorists is ambivalent, since ETA is the heir to the Catholic Carlists and is itself vaguely Catholic. Catalan nationalists, who are very different from their Basque counterparts, are mostly opposed to violence. The Economist reports that the Spain's Aznar government, backed by the Socialist opposition and Catalan nationalists, passed a law to ban Batasuna, the political arm of the BASQUE separatist terrorist group ETA, but three leading Basque bishops criticised the move.
