The Cause of the Civil War
Luis Jorge Matos says that Franco began the "uncivil war". Yes and no. The problem arose after the February 1936 elections when the country fell into chaos. I lived through it. It might have been avoided by skillful statesmanship, but the irresponsible left made that difficult. The group around García Lorca was not responsible. For example, sending La Barraca group of students around Spain to play "Fuenteovejuna" with its refrain "Who killed the Comendador? The village did!" was an incitement to violent behavior. It was at the Residencia that I became dubious about student activists.
As for the date of my book, I expect it to go to press this year, and I hope that a Spanish translation will appear.
