Ignacio Palacios-Huerta writes that he agrees with me on the danger of the official promotion of minority languages. He mentioned the case of the Basque University in Bilbao where knowledge of Eusquera is stressed, with the result that the candidates best qualified professionally are often passed over. The same is true in places like Wales. Some departments there were world-famous, but, when students demanded that Welsh-speaking candidates be appointed, they sank into insignificance. This criterion is pushed everywhere by second-rate candidates who otherwise would not be appointed.
