WAIS Fellow Stanley Payne is the leading U.S. authority on modern Spain. He writes:
I have just come back from a very successful week in Madrid. I have received unofficial permission to begin research in the 28,000 documents in the Fundacion Nacional Francisco Franco archives-- the first politically independent scholar to do so. Wish me luck.
My comment: Most writers about the Franco period have had marked political preferences. Whether the study of these archives will lead to important historical discoveries remains to be seen. Certainly it is good to let some daylight shine on them.
