SPAIN: Was Franco Jewish?

WAISer John Heelan commends WAISer Paul Preston: "Paul Preston's admirable biography of Franco notes "There has been much idle speculation that his family was Jewish, on the basis of his appearance and because both Franco and Bahamonde are common Jewish surnames in Spain" [Franco. A biography, (London: Harper Collins, 1993),p. 1, note 1]". RH: What does "idle speculation" mean? Does "idle" mean useless? No. If Franco was Jewish and knew it, it would certainly affect his behavior, but how? By asserting his Catholic faith?
