American Democracy and Polls

Gene Franklin writes: Randy Black complained that someone, I believe it was Kerry, only responded to polls. I was implying that polls show what people want and asking what's wrong with that? Should our leaders ignore all polls (and other measures of public opinion)?  As for what we deserve, wasn't it Will Rogers who said we had the best Congress money could buy? His observation is at least as correct today as it was then.
