Re: The US and Israel

From the UK, John Heelan says: "Phyllis Gardner would no doubt also find the veneer covering anti-Arabism even more fragile if her husband was Palestinian or Muslim. A recent report in the UK quality press indicated that the eventual owners of the majority of the US media were more sympathetic to Israel than Palestine. It is unlikely that there will be balanced reporting on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in the US. To demonstrate the point, one has only to look at the bias in the US media reporting the Iraq War and Israel's response to the Intifada."

A critical issue now it the building of a "Berlin wall" around Israel, taking in Palestinian territory and butting Bethlehem off from Jerusalem. This has been generally condemned, and the BBC coverage had been much more extensive than the that of American TV. It remains to be seen if US protests are just pro-forma, or whether effective action will be taken against Israel.
