UNITED STATES: Career Secretaries of State
From Greece, Harry Papasotiriou wrote "As far as I know, Lawrence Eagleberger is the only career diplomat who reached the post of secretary of state". Paul Simon of the Foreign Service confirms this: "That is correct. Except "Lawrence of Macedonia", all Secretaries of State have been 'outsiders.' I believe this is typical of most Cabinet-level jobs, throughout American history". The task of running the foreign affairs of the US is an extremely exacting professional job. That it should be entrusted to an individual whose main qualification is his relationship with the President seems like appointing as Dean of a medical school someone who is not an MD.
