American "Cultural Imperialism"
One form of anti-Americanism is the denunciation of cocacolonalization, but it is unfortunate that McDonald's arch has become a symbolic target. In fact, that corporation is is extraordinarily generous. Its founder Ray Croc used to dress up as Santa Claus each year and ring a bell in downtown San Diego. Now his widow, Joan Kroc, has given the Salvation Army $80 million to establish a community center to help the needy of the area. She has also given the University of San Diego $25 million to establish a center for peace studies. Just as the arch in St. Louis symbolizes the entrance to the West, so the McDonald arch shows the way to a kinder world. Paris should welcome one, but it has not.
