United States: Democracy and the Hispanics
Referring to the failure of big money to defeat the California anti-bilingual initiative, Tor Guimaraes views this as isolated success. He writes:
This story indeed seems to be a victory for democracy and common sense. The good guys have won and that is great. Unfortunately, I just read another story at the national level involving Newt Gingrich, a President's Commission on gambling, Richard Gephardt, Bob Dole fund raisers, Trent Lott, Bill Clinton, etc. The story was published in Business Week (June 21, 1999). The big casinos walked off with the prize on this one and our political system seems to be comprised primarily of con men and prostitutes. I hate to be too judgmental, but that was the impression from the outside.
