US Foreign Policy: Secretary of State Colin Powell's hearing

Paul Simon comments: "While Secetary Colin Powell is making a great impression at the State Department, it was interesting to note that the Members of the House Foreign Relations Committee did not ask him nor did he volunteer a single word about his Department or how he intended to run it. If one thinks of a government cabinet branch as a big corporation and Congress as the shareholders, it becomes more than passing strange that the shareholders don't care what the new CEO's plans are for the organization, but instead focus entirely on the market plan."

My comment: I agree entirely. The Secretary is expected to stand on his hind legs and wag his tail. I feel sorry for government employees when bloated congressmen speak scornfully of a bloated bureaucracy. At least Powell was spared that.
