THE US: Mexican Immigrants and party politics
Mexican immigration to the US is certainly a hot topic. Yesterday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., there was a debate on "Hispanic Voters and the GOP". The panel consisted of Steven Camarota, research director of the Center for Immigration Studies, James Gimpel of the University of Maryland, and Ramal Ponnuvu, senior editor of the National Review. The debate was triggered by the wooing of Mexican voters by President Bush. President Fox will visit Washington soon. The big question was: How could Bush have won the California vote? I became dazed by the details and statistics used to bolster arguments. Once more we have the spectacle of a national issue being viewed from a partisan viewpoint.
