US: The Old South and Trent Lott
Mississippi is part of "the Deep South", which means that the old order still has deep roots there. Republican leader in the Senate Trent Lott is from there, and he got into serious trouble on December 5 with his comments at a 100th birthday party for Senator Strom Thurmond (R - South Carolina): "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." He meant it as one of the platitudinarian compliments paid on such an occasion, but it exploded in his face. Naturally the Democrats rushed in to attack, but I have not seen any report on the reaction in Mississippi.
