The US: one nation indivisible?
Mike Sullivan sends this "fantastic night view of the world's population centers today". Click on: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg
This map illustrates our discussion of the American heartland. It shows a large concentration of population in the eastern half of the Anglo-America, a thin strip of populated areas along the west coast, and in between a large, almost empty area. The nearest parallel to this would seem to be Australia, which somehow has succeeded in staying united. Can an Australian WAISer bring us up to date on that problem? Will Australia remain united? Will the US?
