US: Public supports tough policy with Iran

A recent posting analyzed the options the US has in dealing with Iran. The weakest is simply encouraging unrest there. A recent poll shows that the US public backs a tough Iran policy -Most Americans would back US military action against Iran to stop it from acquiring nuclear weapons, and a quarter believe, wrongly, that Iraq used weapons of mass destruction in the last war, according to an opinion poll released on The Washington Post/ABC poll (624/03) found that 56 per cent of respondents endorsed the use of the US military to block Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while 38 per cent opposed it. The US has accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, supporting "terrorist" organizations, and of meddling in the affairs of neighboring Iraq, where US troops invaded and overthrew the government in April.
