US Senate: Richard Lugar

The US Senate supposedly plays a key role in foreign relations. It must approve treaties. Therefore the chairmanship of its Foreign Relations Committee should be highly respected. Well, one of the most admirable Senators, Richard Lugar, turned down the powerful Appropriations, Armed Services, and Finance Committees in favor of the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee. His colleagues thought he was crazy. He admitted it seemed eccentric. Senators view the Foreign Relations Committee as a backwater (New York Times, 12/4/02). No comment.
