The Tenth Anniversary of Desert Storm

Salah Feteih has sent a long message lamenting the plight of the Iraqi people ten years after Desert Storm. He concludes: "The incoming Secretary of State Colin Powell talks about energizing the sanctions. Judging by the outcome so far, they have not undermined the grip of the Iraqi dictator on his country". My response is that we are all acutely aware of this and of the suffering of the Iraqi people. It was a mistake not to end Desert Storm by going as far as Bagdad and removing him. In retrospect, the victory parade down New York's Fifth Avenue seems silly. As for the foreign policy of the new Bush administration, we must wait and see. It was a surprise that he decided to visit Mexico first. Expect more surprises.
