The American Empire

Bert Westbrook asks: "I'd like to hear what WAISers think the word "empire" means". RH: The word has had a bad connotation (empire of evil, etc). It involves controlling other peoples against their will. Under the slogan "The only good Indian is a dead Indian", the US went further and virtually exterminated all the Indian nations. At the time the word "empire" was used favorably in the US. When the process was completed, the word "empire" became derogatory. Who, us? It would be interesting to study Lincoln's use of the word, especially at the time of the war with Mexico, and compare it with that of the Confederates.
