War with Mexico: Winfield Scott
The recent WAIS exchange on the U.S.-Mexican war has shown how sharply divided American and Mexican opinion on it is. The American "hero" of the invasion, "Old Fuss and Feathers" Winfield Scott, is the subject of a new biography by Timothy Johnson, Winfield Scott, the Quest for Military Glory. It eulogizes him as the greatest military leader (!) in American history, who in Mexico taught the Americans the "Napoleonic" tactics which won the Civil War. He was idolized by the American public. There is scant reference to the Mexican attitude. It certainly is not that the invasion simply promoted Scott's military career.
