THE UN and the US
Steve Torok answers Tim Brown's criticism of the UN and its agencies: "Having worked for the UN for 20 years, although in Asia where tolerance is more common, I do not accept that anti-US bias in the UN is the rule, In fact US pragmatism is very much appreciated in project work where something needs to be done. I believe the US should show leadership in just such project work, through the UN. As far as pay-scales go, I took a third of salaries/benefits cut when I left the oil industry to join the UN. By being a team-player, the US may help with UN leadership and create goodwill towards a problem-solving attitude in international organizations replacing the "rising together in collective self reliance from platitudes to platitudes", an ever present danger, as it was in UNESCO".Ronald Hilton - 6/29/03
