UN Reforms and Environmental Issues

Steven Torok, from his long years working for the UN, writes:
"The UN is supposed to be reformed by the member states, not any set of individuals on their own. In practice, there have to be initiatives and apathy by the majority means the ones with a "hidden agenda" might be the ones taking initiatives. There is a strong reform movement within the UN organization itself and, also, very strong resistance from entrenched "powers that be"! Therefore a debate such as Kofi Annan's Commencement Address at Stanford might lead to (if organized right) might well help to steer the reform movement in the right direction!"

My comment: The US is part of the world, and the UN is here to stay. The problem is to save it from the fate of the League of Nations. Only a dangerous fool would want another world war, and more than ever, the US cannot go it alone. We must be sure that reforms really improve it. As a strong supporter of NATO, I deem that its relations with the UN must be clarified in such a way that it can act on its own where necessary.
