Wais News

The WAIS is a comity promoting international understanding. It is therefore important that its members get to know each other. Hence these notes. For a list of e-mail addresses, consult the home page: http//www.stanford.edu/group/wais/

Walter Allen, who recently left a deanship at Michigan State to become director of the Virginia Higher Education Commission, is on the board of the American University in Paris, where he met David Pike and learned about CIIS, of which he is now a member. He is also on the Board of Overseers of the Hoover Institution, and he graciously came to see me. Now he is much more than just an e-mail address. His field is political philosophy, and his book on the Federalist Papers will soon be published. We discussed federalism around the world.

Two WAIS Fellows, David Pike and Robert Helm, again took part in the Mediterrean Conference, which this year was held in Valencia.

The replies to our first annual appeal have begun to come in, and we express our thanks to the following people. Peter Green is the son-in-law of Sir Harold Mitchell, a beloved member of the group which founded CIIS. Sidney Raffel of Stanford Medical School served for some years as chairman of the CIIS Board. Dwight Peterson is a former student who has retired from a career of Banking in the Southern Cone. Former students are a mixed lot. Some, like Dwight Peterson, appreciate whatever we did for them, while others for whom we made a major effort remain indifferent. Human Nature. Incidentally, I am always glad to see former students. Maurice Harari is Secretary General of the International Association of University Presidents; it will be the subject of a WAIS TV interview with him. Thanks again to all.
