WAIS Conference, July 28, 2001

In response to many requests, a WAIS conference is planned for Saturday, July 28, 2001, to be held at Stanford. Accommodations at Governor's Corner, where conferences are held, are pleasant and reasonable by local standards. I am submitting the plans to the WAIS board, some members of which have already expressed their keen interest.
Present thinking is to hold a series of discussion groups in the morning, and after lunch presentations by each of the chairman, so that the whole group could get an overview of the discussions. There would follow a reception, giving people a chance to meet other members. Since WAIS is scattered all over the globe, it would be an unusual opportunity for you to meet others from a distance.
The themes of the discussion groups could be a country (e.g. modern Spain) or a theme. Eric Boehm suggests "the intellectual barriers between disciplines and the nurturing and rewarding of narrow specialization, at the expense of significant advances in multi-disciplinary communication and research." You are invited to make suggestions. I will keep Board members informed of your suggestions and seek their opinion. If for whatever reason it is desirable that your name appear on the program, that could be arranged. If you wish to present a paper, that would necessarily depend on the time available, but your suggestions are welcome. The conference proceedings will be distributed in book form worldwide over the net.
Those coming from a distance might wish to use the opportunity to visit California. If you wished to stay longer at Governor's Corner, that can normally be arranged. To give us some idea of the interest in the conference, I would be grateful if you would inform me of
     1. your hope of attending and
     2. your wish for accommodations at Governor's Corner.
This is simply a preliminary attempt to get an idea of the attendance.
I will keep the Board informed of progress and solicit their active participation in planning and in the conference itself.
